2015 Estonian American Innovation Award Recipients Announced January 22

The American Chamber of Commerce Estonia (AmCham Estonia), the Baltic American Freedom Foundation (BAFF), and the U.S. Embassy in Tallinn, Estonia will announce the finalists and recipients of the 2015 Estonian American Innovation Award on January 22, 2015 at Mektory Center.

Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas will open the award ceremony, which honors the innovative initiative and cooperative spirit between the U.S. and Estonia.  A special keynote address will be given by the “Godfather of Artificial Intelligence,” Dr. Patrick H Winston, Ford Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The award recipient will receive €10,000 euros, provided by BAFF.  Past recipients have included companies like GrabCAD, ZeroTurnaround and Fortumo. A newcomer award will also be given this year, with the recipient receiving €5,000 euros.  New this year will be a special award given by FACEBOOK, called the Creativity Recognition Award. This award honors for innovation in the area of social media apps.

Close to 20 companies entered the competition, which was open to Estonian residents, firms, and organizations that have distinguished themselves through innovation in collaboration with a U.S. counterpart.  The awards panel, comprised of eight members from both sides of the Atlantic, made its decision based on several factors, primarily creativity, impact or clear potential impact of the innovation, and demonstration of collaboration with a U.S. entity.
