Statement on George Floyd’s Death

June 3, 2020

The death of Mr. George Floyd was a senseless tragedy and we grieve for his family and for his community.  It has filled Americans all over the country with horror, anger and grief.  The United States’ justice system is taking action to seek accountability for Mr. Floyd’s tragic death, including through ongoing investigations at the federal and state levels.  Americans are entitled by law to gather peacefully to express their outrage over police misconduct, to call for change, and to demand accountability.  The United States and free and open societies around the world are strengthened through the debates produced through our citizens exercising their right to free assembly and speech.  We will not try to hide our painful struggle, and instead believe that honest public debate will help us emerge better and stronger.
